Revue of the Lecture given by Viv Hendra on Thursday January 10th 2019
This was a lively and empathetic talk on the Cornish artist John Opie from his humble beginnings as the son of a carpenter and wheelwright to his later life as a successful, fashionable and wealthy Member of the Royal Academy specialising in portrait and history painting.
Viv Hendra, of the Lander Gallery, Truro, is an acknowledged expert on the life and times of Opie (probably pronounced “Oppy”) after many years of research. His talk and book of the same name bring Opie to llife through a series of anecdotes culled from various authentic sources. His skills as a story teller and depth of knowledge held the group’s attention throughout and stimulated an interest in seeing more of the work of this neglected genius.
